“Still – if I am going to spend eternity visiting this moment and that, I’m grateful that so many of those moments are nice.” – Kurt Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse 5

four years later and the over-and-over realization that you are not here still sucks the wind out of me. I think it always will. I love you. 🌶 hey Google, play Fireflies by Owl City 🌶 #johnstathakisappreciationpost
The should've- and would've-beens are some of the least openly discussed parts of grief, which is interesting because I think they’re the ones that especially linger. Every August 4th, I remember that John should've celebrated more than 25 birthdays. Every time a friend gets pregnant, I remember that John should've had those 10 kids he so desperately wanted. And then grief doubles down and I remember that he would've someday been a grandfather, something he funnily looked forward to. The list goes on.⁣
I think we have a collective misunderstanding of resilience. It’s true that resilience sometimes looks like giving pain the finger and putting on your best outfit and having a fully stocked fridge and accomplishing everything on your to-do list and reading instead of scrolling before bed.⁣ But other times, it looks like forgetting to shower for three days and hitting snooze 10 times before finally getting up and skipping that workout you meant to do and ignoring the growing pile of laundry and relying on Trader Joe’s frozen meals for dinner and wondering every night how anyone can fall asleep without taking a sleep aid(s). ⁣

Today, President Biden, a man who knows great loss intimately, did something 45 has never once done: sincerely acknowledged and asked for a moment of silence for the people we’ve lost and the pain we’ve experienced the past year-ish. And today, I’m grateful for unapologetic empathy and compassion in our country’s highest office. Basic human decency, man. I’ve really, really missed it.⁣
